Alito Hearings

The Alito hearings concluded yesterday without a hitch. I don’t think they know it yet, but the Democrats looked foolish and this will hurt them in the long run. Some highlights:

Concerned alumni of Princeton (CAP): The Democrats peppered Alito with questions on his membership to this group. They claimed it was a bigoted organization that only wanted white men at Princeton, and Biden even compared it to the Ku Klux Klan. Several problems with this:

  • There is no evidence that Alito was at all active in the organization. He simply subscribed to its magazine.
  • Both Laura Ingraham and Dinesh D’Souza were editors of the magazine and Fox News Legal Analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano was its Publisher, hardly white male supremacist.
  • The organization actually stood for basic conservative principles: It opposed lowering of standards to meet artificial affirmative action quotas in Princeton admissions and it opposed the removal of ROTC from campus.

Drawing tears from Alito’s wife: The Democrats were so harsh in their questioning, they went overboard and caused Samual Alito’s wife to leave in tears. This will be the image that will stay with these hearings, and it is devastating for the Democrats.

Ted Kennedy vs. Arlen Specter: Here at Axis of Right, we are definitely not Arlen Specter fans. He is a liberal Republican who often votes contrary to the Conservative movement. But in this case, he acquitted himself wonderfully throughout the hearings, and took Ted Kennedy down in a great exchange regarding a motion to subpoena records from the Library of Congress.

Lindsey Graham: Another Republican, more Conservative than Specter but often on the wrong side of issues, he was wonderful in these hearings.

Samuel Alito: This man was articulate, intelligent, and will make an outstanding Supreme Court justice.

The committee vote is supposed to take place Tuesday. The Democrats want to delay it until after their Wednesday caucus, so they can discuss strategy and talk about a possible filibuster.
