Santorum Inching Upward; Casey Still Mum

The Pennsylvania Senate race is still not looking good for one of our favorite Senators. The latest Rasmussen poll shows Democrat Bob Casey Jr. leading Sen. Rick Santorum by 15 points, 53-38%. This is an improvement from the previous Rasmussen survey where Santorum trailed by 20 points. All significant movement in this race since then has occurred as a result of Santorum’s number rising. I attribute this to Santorum pulling his foot out of his mouth and to the return of some of his conservative supporters who were upset over his Specter endorsement. I am still categorizing this race as leaning to the Democrats for the same reasons as before.

Fortunately for Casey, his campaign hasn’t started. Once his mouth opens, his numbers will drop. This race will be close and will come down to this: Santorum will win if he can prove Casey is not really pro-life. Casey will win if he can disguise the fact that he isn’t really pro-life. Fortunately, Casey isn’t really pro-life. And at this point, Santorum is doing exactly what he needs to do.

hey Mike, what makes you say Casey is not Pro-Life? His father was solid on that issue.

It is a difficult tap dance for him to be sure. He wants to milk the liberal donors and the moderate-conservative votes. For that reason, Santorum has a good shot to get back in it.

Just because someone’s father holds a position, it does not mean that the son does. The real problem is that Bob Casey may talk pro-life, and may even act pro-life, and may even believe himself to be pro-life. But time after time, when Democrats enter the Federal Government (the Senate, the House), their pro-life beliefs fly out the window. Among the Democrats who have at one time claimed to be Pro-life:

Dick Gephardt
Al Gore
Harry Ried (he still claims to be)
Dick Durbin
Joe Lieberman

The list goes on. Democrats who achieve power in the party must sell their soul to NARAL.

Look at the trends that have gripped the Democratic Party. They have to run to the center-right in order to even compete. That goes back to John Kerry floating McCain’s name for Secretary of State AND Veep!

I think Casey is trying to do the same thing (that which BJ Clinton was good at) shooting straight to the middle, blur the electoral spectrum, and use cheap antics to get you in.

Plus, thank God that Dubya is NOT like his dad on taxes, defense and SCOTUS nominees!
