The people of Canada have spoken and the left has lost another election. Congratulations to Stephen Harper, the next Prime Minister of Canada.

How conservative is the new controlling party in Canada? Are they fiscal and/or social conservatives? Any insight into what issues moved the polls and electoral shift to the right?

The electoral shifts in Canada are probably due to a mix of short term and long term political forces:

The long term political forces, I believe, are pushing Canada to a more internationalist place where its disagreements with the West or the USA can be made without a chuckle from everyone else in the room. Remember, the Canadian military stormed the beaches on D-Day. There is a proud tradition there that has been supressed recently by social engineering and an increasingly more obvious series of empty governmental promises.

I believe that the short term forces deal with the scandals that have plagued the Liberal leadership in recent years. The Canadian people are temporarily upset at the Liberals. Notice that this election only gave the Tories a plurality, not a majority. Yet, there is a possibility that the Tories seize this opportunity to sway the center into a more interantionalist, fiscally responsible direction, thereby creating real majorities of a pro-American, pro-capitalist (and thereby more relevant) Canada in the future.

Unfortunately there is a minority government and Stepehen Harper has taken an incremental approach, even during the campaign. Surprisingly enough, he is pro-life though he can’t do anything about it.

They’re pro- American and fiscally conservative. They can’t implement the socially conservative part of their agenda, but you need to start somewhere.

I like the pic as well. They didn’t elect Jesse Helms but it was a bitch slap to the hard left.
