Successes in the War on Terror

I’m glad President Bush is highlighting actual successes in the War on Terror, with his account of a 9/11-like attack that was foiled in 2002. Much of the success in the war on terror cannot be publicized, due to national security reasons. But when the White House can put forth these events, it should as a way of showing the American people that there are still terrorists who want to slaughter innocent American citizens. The War on Terror has not been won, and it is far from over — but we are winning.

Sorry, have to pull you up on that one, just a little. Bush is still talking about sucesses in this war, referring to arrests in 02 that were found to be baseless and the people released, a couple of them after long incaceration without any right or representation. Don’t know if was in the media in the US, but was down here in the last 10-14 days, I watched it here on one of his down country speeches. It triggered a bell and I checked it at the time.

Now he may well be referring to actual sucesses this time, I haven’t seen the speech to which you refer, but after seeing the same ‘success’ trumpeted 3-4 times in the last couple of years in the cases I refer to, excuse me being a little sceptical. I’m not denying there have been some spectacular sucesses, just playing devil’s advocate, my favourite role even on subjects upon which I agree strongly.

Ensures I examine both sides of a story to confirm fact. As every politician can, on occasion be ‘economical with the truth’ I address almost everything, even from those politicians I believe on this basis. From time to time you come up with something. Doesn’t stop me supporting them, just makes me think and not follow blindly or from habit.

Excuse my vagueness on the exact date of the speech being on TV down here, I’m just back home today after a short stay in Hosptial, and haven’t been able put my hands to the original notes. (suspect mrs rightonoz has been her usual ruthless efficiency and ‘tidied it’

In the past, his comments were rather vague. This time, he spoke specifically of an attack on LA where the actual terrorists were captured, and on doing more reading, I was mistaken earlier when I mentioned 2002. The attack in question actually was planned for 2003, and was the result of the capture of Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

Sorry to hear about your stay in the hospital, hope you are feeling better.

This success in the War on Terror was published for all to see in the 9/11 Commission Report. Bush just elaborated on a few points. What got me was the LA Mayor’s reaction to Bushes’ speech as if he never heard of such a thing. The Mayor needs new aides and to keep the partisanship to “obvious but not obnoxious” level in the future. It was SO transparent.
