World Cup Fever

I NEVER thought I would say this, but I can’t wait for the World Cup. Back in the day, I didn’t follow this event. My experience was limited to rooting for the USA for one reason. Although we didn’t care, it mattered so much to the rest of the world. Imagine the Schadenfreude.

My outlook on this event changed four years ago when my law school roommate and others caused me to casually follow the World Cup, culminating with an amazing experience watching the Brazil-Germany final at Zum Schneider. This year, I will be more than a casual fan. I know much more than I did four years ago. Though mostly foreign, the names will not be foreign to me. I have a favorite EPL team. I follow other leagues as well.

Although not yet at the pinnacle of the sport, Team USA continues to improve from the atrocious days of yesteryear. I will bleed red, white and blue for the next month but other teams which have my affection include England (I’m an Anglophile), Germany (click on aforementioned Zum Schneider link), Poland (not a powerhouse but who doesn’t love Poland) and Australia (have fun with Brazil guys).

To non-soccer (football) fans, find a soccer bar and give it a shot. You might just like it.

The World Cup looks as if it began with a bang (most of my kids were whining today that they couldn’t watch it during class) and the host country won the first game to boot.

A good soccer bar in the NY/NJ area: Mulligan’s in Hoboken.
