The People’s House

I’ll believe it when I see it but word is that the House Republicans may have discovered their spines.  After the Democrats won the 2006 election, they passed a rule requiring that earmarks in spending bills be revealed before voting on said bills.  The Democrats being Democrats however, quickly decided to ignore their own rules and Republicans called them on it.

Procedurally I don’t have any problem with this.  The Democrats won the election and they can run the House as they see fit.  They’ve lost all credibility on their claims of bipartisanship, but they’re still free to do what they’re doing.

Substantively the Democrats should be ashamed of themselves.  I understand why they’re doing it though.  Anyone trying to use taxpayer dollars for Louis Vuitton handbags should be tempted to hide it.  A few months ago, I joked that Nancy Pelosi wanted a government-funded diamond-studded tiara.  At least I think I was joking.
