MSM’s Simplistic Gameplan Against Fred Thompson

The liberal media does not have a deep playbook. History shows that whenever the MSM is determined to undermine a national Republican figure, they either try to label that person as “mean and/or crazy” (Richard Nixon, Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole) or “stupid and/or lazy” (Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush). Taking a quick look at history should tell us more than enough about the relative effectiveness of these two strategies. Although it is possible for the “mean” Republicans to succeed, it is much easier for Republicans with national ambitions to win elections if the media tries to convince people that the candidate is stupid and/or lazy.

If early coverage of the 2008 election is any indication, Fred Thompson will be a formidable candidate. The media has been using the lazy angle in their coverage against the former Tennessee Senator for quite some time. Now that Thompson has declared his candidacy, it was only a matter of time before the “stupid” angle to appear. Well the time is now. Politico has decided to implement the bedrock of the stupid prong of the liberal media’s second approach: Fred Thompson is uninterested in policy details.

If you think this coverage is nauseating, just wait until Thompson outlines a low-tax policy; not that the coverage would make any sense. I would argue that it’s more simple-minded to support high-tax policies that have failed every time and everywhere they’ve been tried. But then again, so has the “stupid and lazy” angle. Keep it coming Politico.
