Domenici Bails On Us

Well, I don’t really mean that.  Pete Domenici has served his country well as the U.S. Senator from New Mexico since 1973.  It’s just a shame that he isn’t running for re-election next year, especially since New Mexico is one of our purplest states.  The outcome of that election is anything but certain, but the seat will be a ripe target for the Democrat Party.

I’ll post more when I have more info on the possible contenders.  In the meantime, just consider this as bad news.

I certainly consider this a blow for next year too. Like you noted above, we’re not yet sure who the back-benchers are or if the field is that good to have a good chance of retaining the seat. Yet, this is a situation that I believe the Republicans brought upon themselves by not standing on principle over the last few years. If we don’t have a common direction, then the American people will continue to let the Dems take us in their direction– which is bad and ruinous if you listen to their rhetoric about socialism and weakness in the War on Terror.

I also agree this is bad for the Republicans…one of 5 who declared they won’t run in 2008. I have two words: Bill Richardson…he could very well be the next Senator from New Mexico…and he will be tough to beat, even against Heather Wilson.
