Muslim Teddy Bears

By now, you must have heard about Gillian Gibbons, that British national who taught school children in Sudan.  Unfortunately for her, she had her elementary school class name the class teddy bear.  They named it “Mohammad.”  Uh-oh, that’s blasphemy, “insulting the religion and inciting hatred!”  After some wrangling and pressure from the British government and British Muslims, her sentence was reduced to fifteen days in prison including time-served without any of those token lashes.

However, some angry Sudanese Muslims are calling for a greater sentence (with at least a few lashes) or even her death!  Here in the West we look at this as crazy, and rightly so in my opinion.  Jailing someone for this offense and demanding lashes or even her death is obscene.  Gibbons was from the West and got the doctrinal dictate a bit confused– it’s not like she named the goat or pig Mohammad, it was a teddy bear and the name the students wanted the toy to have.  By the way, how many Muslim parents name their male children Mohammad in the Islamic world?  I assume many.  I guess it’s OK, not idolatry or blasphemy, even if some of those same children in fact name their stuffed animals and toys after the Prophet.  Apparently in Sudan, you just can’t do that if your white or from the West (even if you are a Muslim like Gibbons!).

Remember those Mohammad cartoons (which led to riots and the burning of Western effigies), the urine-on-the-Koran episode (which led to over a dozen deaths), or that Dutch filmmaker killed for his movie’s portrayal of the treatment of women in Muslim society.  This irrational pattern of behavior is to be expected from an undereducated, poor people brainwashed by a government who uses religious tensions and hatreds to deflect from that own government’s poor job.  I believe that it’s less about religion and more about politicians and regimes using religion to deflect the anger of the masses onto the “other” or the “outsider”, in this case a Westerner who messed with the wrong teddy bear, rather than face revolution at home.

In case you forgot, Sudan also contains a region named “Darfur.”  Did you know that most of the people being rounded up, brutalized, and starved happen to be Christian?  Hmm.  I think Britain should be demanding Gibbons immediate release or revisit the issue of Darfur with a bit more vigor at the UN, especially since those British troops leaving Iraq are soon going to need something else to do.

But, you know, Christians are just as bad … I know that ’cause Rosie O’Donnell said so. I’m sure you remember all of the Lowe’s that we burned down over the “family trees” incident this past month. And the deaths over “Last Temptation of Christ” 20 years ago, and how we’re always killing teachers who talk about evolution.
