Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Wants Martyrdom

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the effectively waterboarded 9/11 mastermind sitting in a cell at Club Gitmo, wants to be “martyred.”  He said so in front of a Military Tribunal today, along with a few of his co-defendants.

Our legal system will eventually sentence KSM to death – he’s admitted his part in the 9/11 attacks, is getting his day in court to move the process along, and wants to die.  He’ll get his wish.  While I’m a fan of the death penalty, I think maybe this guy should sit in prison for a while longer and think about what he did (perhaps 2,948 days or so).  Why allow him to rape his virgins in heaven before we have to?  Think of the virgins for Goodness sake!

Some still want to have civilian trials for these criminals, though there is no precedent for it and it would be a dangerous precedent if implemented.  I have read the Geneva Convention (and posted on it about a year ago) on POWs and terrorists aren’t covered… specifically because they wanted to discourage the stateless, lawless nature of terrorism to be unsanctioned by international accords.

Hi Ryan,

We’re on opposite sides of the Death Penaly fence.

In terms of crime, every single study has concluded there is absolutley positive no effect on murder rates, and in fact some suggest that it may increase the number of murders where there is the potential for a death penaly in a non murder crime. I also have a moral issue with anyone, the state included killing another human (time of war excepted), however here I am about to step over my moral line.

In this particular case, while I could be moved to say hang the bastards (slowly) more in sympathy for the Americans (and Australians, Brits etc) who lost loved ones in 9/11, I like you, want my heavenly virgins unsullied by these animals. In addition, while no execution is humane and involves suffering (even your Supreme’s acknowledge that)the thought that we would allow them to (almost) without significant suffering slide into their matyrdom makes me wild. If they have to be executed, an old fashioned lynching, haul them up from the ground and let them wriggle their way to eternity.

My personal preference is that these animals should be imprisoned in solitary, with hard labour, every punishment we can think of, with zero amenities until the day they die their natural miserable death. I don’t want any ‘matyr’ to think we will give them their wishes and make them a hero to other impressionable people of similar persuasion. Let them all know, you try this on us and you will suffer for the rest of your days, and we will rejoice in your suffering!

Hey Oz:

I’m on the fence when it comes to the death penalty (probably slightly closer to your position than to Ryan’s in light of your war exception), but we have to be careful when we cite “studies.” “Every single study” does not reach the conclusion you claim though I concede the majority of studies take that position.

That said, it is difficult to say whether capital punishment is a deterrent because nearly endless appeals do not give the punishment a chance to work. Right now, the punishment is simply not applied frequently enough to know for sure. Nevertheless, I agree that the moral objections to capital punishment remain strong.

As for the issue of KSM doing anything in heaven, well . . .
