McGovern in a Reagan Mask

We recently had a discussion about Barack Obama’s “tax cut” plan, the one that redistributes income to those who don’t pay taxes. Informed people aren’t buying it, but it was a smart move for someone trying to win an election in a conservative country. Today, Obama paid lip service to another prong of fiscal conservatism, spending cuts.

On the one hand, Obama’s rhetoric concerns me. The One’s talking heads have been repeating the lie that their candidate plans to cut taxes. If Obama successfully couples his “tax cut” promise with one to cut spending, then he might be able to convince enough people that he is not the kind of Democrat he has always been.  Pretending to be a conservative worked for Bill Clinton in 1992 and could work for Obama this year.

On the other hand, Obama’s rhetoric is reassuring because it shows that Jimmy Carter-style liberalism has jumped the shark.

Obama has accused John McCain of being a Barry Goldwater-turned-Dennis Kucinich. Let’s hope our country doesn’t go in to the voting booth thinking that this George McGovern is Ronald Reagan.

Our nation needs a president like Ronald Reagan in the White House today.
