The Creeping Middle Class According to Obama

Barack Obama keeps talking about how the Middle Class will get a tax cut according to his plan.  For months, he has been using the mantra that families making under $250,000 will get a tax cut.  Putting aside for a moment how Obama’s tax plan is actually a tax increase for most Americans, it is becoming increasingly clear that with a week to go before the election, Barack Obama is already moving the income level of what the middle class is downward.  In an ad this weekend put out by the Obama campaign, the number shifted to $200,000 for a family.

Now, in some areas of the country, $200,000 may seem like a lot.  In the Boston area, however, for a two-income household family of four, $200,000 is not an insurmountable salary and is hardly rich.  While I am not at that income level myself, I would like to be someday, and do not want to be punished for my success.

If that weren’t enough, now Joe Biden is redefining the middle class yet again, to those families making under $150,000.

John McCain, thankfully, is jumping on this:

Senator Obama has made a lot of promises. First he said people making less than 250,000 dollars would benefit from his plan, then this weekend he announced in an ad that if you’re a family making less than 200,000 dollars you’ll benefit — but yesterday, right here in Pennsylvania, Senator Biden said tax relief should only go to “middle class people — people making under 150,000 dollars a year.” It’s interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down. At this rate, it won’t be long before Senator Obama is right back to his vote that Americans making just 42,000 dollars a year should get a tax increase. We can’t let that happen.

What is to stop Obama from again lowering the threshold.  First, it was $250k.  Then $200.  Now, it’s $150.  The Middle Class will be whatever Obama wants it to be in January if he is elected.  To quote Jim Geraghty at National Review Online’s Campaign Spot, “All statements by Barack Obama come with an expiration date. All of them.”
