Star Trek Returns… and so does a little geek in me

I must confess that I had an uber-geek moment last night when I first laid eyes on the new Star Trek movie trailer.  It looks really good!  As a minimal kind of fan-boy I used to really enjoy Star Trek, though I’ve spent most of the last decade focusing my inner geekdom on Lord of the Rings and the new Star Wars prequels.  Throw in some X-Men, Matrix, Harry Potter, etc. and the geek-in-me had little room for a new “Star Trek” movie.  This would make #11 for goodness sake!

The movie is set to be released on May 8, 2009 and I’m very enthused.  Eric Bana is the bad guy and Leonard Nimoy apparently has a cameo.  JJ Abrams is trying to do the same kind of thing that revitalized the Bond franchise — revamp the old, original storyline with an edgier, more modern twist while still respecting the old matieral.  Below is the new trailer, full of the action, fun, and stuff blowing up that’ll get me there opening weekend (without a date, probably).

My older brother and I discussed this, and we have issues … it’s been pretty well established in what was once (before Paramount ruined EVERYTHING) the canon that Kirk and Spock met when Kirk took command of the Enterprise (related to the fact that Spock was the only character who survived from “The Cage,” the original pilot, to appear in “Where No Man Has Gone Before”). We resent this overhaul.

Klingon cloaking devices were one thing, but now this?

Of course, I’ll protest like this now, but probably wind up seeing it.

Mike:
By “fan boy” I mean the kind of person like Comic Book Guy, Harry Knowles or Kevin Smith (who plays Silent Bob). My geekness may be more than the average observer of pop culture, but I’m not even on the same continent as those guys, or even most other fan boys I know. I cherry-pick too much to be part of their crowd. As such, I stand by my minimalist statement.

Wickle:
I knew there would be come canonical changes with the overhaul, but I’m not aware of too much nitty-gritty. I’ve been trying to avoid plot details here and there so that some of the movie is new on opening weekend. I’ve already heard about Kirk and Spock, and something else about Scotty. After the debut, we can continue to debate this. I just hope in the meantime the other changes Abrams makes aren’t too bad.
