Governor Blagojevich (D-IL) Arrested

Governor Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) was arrested today on Federal Corruption Charges.  Gov. Blagojevich, who yesterday had called upon the state of Illinois to cease business with Bank of America, is now in federal custody.  He is accused of attempting to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat by promising it to the highest bidder.  Under Illinois Law, the Governor appoints an interim Senator when a vacancy occurs.

Michelle Malkin has excerpts from the complaint, which details other corruption charges as well as the Senate-for-sale charge, was filed by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, of Plame-gate fame.  The complaint involves a long list of corruption involving convicted-felon Tony Rezko, and attempting to line his pockets as much as possible.

Speculation about Blacgojevich’s involvement in Fitzgerald’s probe has been percolating since October when Rezko agreed to talk to federal prosecutors.  However, no one that I am aware of speculated that Blagojevich would attempt to sell Obama’s Senate seat.

This is the Chicago that President-Elect Barack Obama comes from.  This is the Democrat Chicago Machine of Mayor Richard Daley.  It is unclear whether FItzgerald’s investigation has concluded, or if there are other indictments coming down the pike.  While there is no evidence of Obama being a target of these investigations, his involvement or those of more of his Chicago associates in the Chicago political machine’s corruption would not surprise me in the least.  Obama’s political career began in this political machine, was promoted by it, and it helped him reach national prominence.  Already, his real estate dealings with Tony Rezko raised some eyebrows during the campaign, and the full extent of their relatonship to this date is not known.  Whether or not Fitzgerald will have the courage to go after his new boss, if the circumstances warrant, is another matter.

As far as this case, however, it appears that team Obama did not want to play ball with Blacgojevich (leading to some rather colorful language on the Governor’s part).  The question now remains, did Blagojevich agree to a bribe by one of the contenders?

Clinton-era nostalgia abounds as “Blagogate” will distract (but not destroy) the incoming Administration! “My Billy [Barry] isn’t a bad boy — he just plays with the bad boys.” Right. Obama surrounded himself with Clintonites, now the Clinton stench of corruption is reeking from the political gutters by osmosis.

It didn’t take a year for Whitewater to become a household name back when BJ took over. Obama hasn’t even taken the oath and he’s already caught himself in a bind: he went on record today saying he had NO contact with Blagojevich about the issue of Obama’s Senate replacements, but David Axelrod himself said Obama DID talk to Gov. Blago about potential replacements not too long ago!

I see a new independent counsel by next year which will be really annoying to The One. I don’t think this goes away quickly. That depends on Blago: is Blago the type to take everyone down with him to plea-down a potential sentence if convicted? As Sal noted Blago and Obama are from the same Chicago machine. This will be a true test of the strength of that machine.

At least Obama didn’t wag his finger at us… yet.

Obama may have Clinton cronies, but the fact that he is a product of the Chicago Democrat Machine…the same machine that stole the election for JFK in 1960 (a lot of dead people voted in Cook Co, IL) and the same machine that allowed the riots at the 1968 DNC to occur…is a new level of corruption all in its own.

I doubt it will destroy his admin, but it is interesting that both Obama and Axelrod have varying public comments on this. I say let’s look into this…Merry Fitzmas!
