Meadowland Mauling Killed the Patriots

The football gods are still inflicting more karmic mayhem on the New England Patriots.

After the Spygate fiasco, the football gods waited until the last possible moment to exact their revenge against the Pats — waiting until the last three-minutes of the Super Bowl to take the possible undefeated season out of reach by losing to a New York sports team!

Then, the football gods decided that this wasn’t enough (remember, the Pats at least made it to the Super Bowl, which isn’t really a punishment is it).  Tom Brady needed to go down in the first half of the first game of the 2008 season with a season-ending knee injury.  Henceforth, scores of other injuries plagued the Pats all season.  However, Brady’s replacement, Matt Cassel, turned out to be pretty awesome, so something else was needed to punish the Pats – the Patriots’ division suddenly became really competitive for the first time in nearly a decade.

Nonetheless, going into the final week of the NFL season, the Pats still could have made it into the playoffs.  They won out, but as the football gods would have it, they would need to rely on yet another New York team to step up if the Pats were to make the playoffs — the hated Jets needed to “squish the fish” by defeating division rival Maimi.

Thusly, with this in mind, the football gods once again punished the Pats Nation by making sure that we would have to actually root enthusiastically for the Jets in order to secure our future.  Alas, the NY Jets lost 24-17 to the Miami Dolphins, keeping the Pats out of the playoffs — a possible #3 seed to nothing.

New England becomes the only other team since the 1985 Denver Broncos to miss the playoffs with an 11-5 record since the AFL and NFL merged back in the day.  Also, the last time the Pats missed the playoffs it was because in 2002 the league reorganized both Conferences into 4 divisions, eliminating the third wild card team, which would have been the Pats… just like this year!  Victims twice.

Here’s a list of teams with a worse record than the Pats who are nonetheless in the playoffs this year:

1.  Philadelphia (9-6-1)

2.  Arizona (9-7)

3.  Denver or San Diego (either 9-7 or 8-8 respectively)

4.  Minnesota (10-6)
