With anti-semitism on the rise in recent years, especially in Europe, disturbing scenes like these have become increasingly common.  What’s even more troubling is that anti-semitism is socially acceptable enough in certain areas for people to shamelessly display their hatred out in the open.  Not that all anti-semites are content to confine their filth to words; no, some cannot express their hatred without throwing violence into the mix.

As an American, it is my opinion that speech, no matter how vile, should be protected by law.  When that speech escalates into violence however, it is the government’s responsibility to take action to stop it.  Unfortunately, some European governments have adopted old habits in confronting evil.  When an Islamic extremist group recently took to the streets in Germany to protest Israel, police officers responded not by controlling those disrupting the peace, but by banning Israeli flags.  As if enraged psychopaths will limit their savagery to the spoken word if appeased.  Who can blame Ed Driscoll for seeing 1942?

There is little doubt that the media’s coverage is at least partially to blame for the rise of anti-semitism.  The BBC for one is under increasing criticism for reporting Israel’s recent defensive action in Gaza woefully out of context.  In fact, the coverage has been so dreadful, the network is even losing the support of those who used to defend the network.  That’s not to say coverage of Israel has reached the extreme of Hamasvision, but the media should at least re-evaluate their coverage when even left-wing politicians storm off television sets in protest of the pro-terrorist bias.

There are encouraging signs though.  Don’t expect this to be played up on many media outlets, but the anti-Israel crowd has no monopoly on activism.  Courageous demonstrators have taken to the streets in places like Toronto, Madrid, and Rome to support Israel’s actions to confront terrorism.  We live in a time when the Middle East’s greatest hope for human dignity, freedom, and democracy is engaged in a war with those who hate Jews more than they love their own children.  It’s encouraging to see that in the midst of hatred and ignorance, there are at least some people who take the words “never again” seriously.

There is no negotiating with a mad man, or with Jihadis who want to die to go get their 72 virgins.
I hope Israel doesn’t quit too early. If Israel is destroyed, terrorism in the rest of the world will just increase, it will never stop, as long as there are Radical Muslims, or rather, Muslim Fundamentalists; who are appeased, defended, and kissed up to.

All real freedom starts with freedom of speech. Without freedom of speech there can be no real freedom.
