Obama Cabinet Limbo

Tom Daschle, President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, apologized earlier today for failing to pay $120,000 in taxes.  Predictably, Obama is standing by his man in a way the voters of South Dakota did not in 2004. Oddly enough, the fact that a public official skipped out on paying his taxes isn’t even the most outrageous part of this episode.

What’s truly outrageous about this news is that less than two weeks into the new President’s term, elevating a tax cheat to the Cabinet isn’t even newsworthy.  It’s partially because this isn’t the first Obama Cabinet nominee to give himself a tax cut that he wouldn’t dream of giving the rest of us.  It’s partially because most Republicans aren’t making it an issue.  It’s partially because the mainstream media isn’t covering the story the way you know they would have if President Bush had shown such negligence in selecting a Cabinet.  Whatever the reason, Barack Obama, his devoted followers in the media, and spineless Republicans have lowered the bar for all future Cabinet-level appointments in just two weeks.

It makes me wonder.  How low can Obama go?  What outrages of our day will be too commonplace to care about in 2012 and beyond?
