The Success of Fox News

in Media,Media Bias

Charles Krauthammer, the ever-eloquent conservative columnist and panelist on Fox News’ Special Report, recently received the Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism. In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to the success of Fox News and it’s role in opening up journalism and our ability to get news beyond the liberal monopoly.  In the process, it became the most successful cable news channel, by far.  Fox News, according to Krauthammer, destroyed the liberal media monopoly, and along with Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, and the blogosphere, gave Conservatives a voice in the public debate.  Krauthammer sums up the genius of Fox News better than I have ever heard it:

I said some years ago that the genius of Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes was to have discovered a niche market in American broadcasting — half the American people. The reason Fox News has thrived and grown is because it offers a vibrant and honest alternative to those who could not abide yet another day of the news delivered to them beneath layer after layer of often undisguised liberalism.

I remember first watching Fox News in the late 1990s during the waning years of the Clinton administration.  As a Conservative, it was a welcome breath of fresh air at the time when there were no other outlets for Conservative opinions.  Fox News is not a Conservative network.  Rather, it is a network that is committed to airing both sides.  It seems to tilt right because the other networks tilt so far to the left.  True, certain hosts such as Hannity are Conservatives, but others are centrist (Bill O’Reilly) or Liberal (Shephard Smith).  The genious of Fox News though, and what infuriates the left, is that it gives voice and credibility to the Conservative point of view , when the left would rather just have us all shut up and be obedient little comrades.

The arrogance of liberalism allowed this monopoly to be carried out for so long. No one in media every dared to think that there was a population out there that believed differently from them.

The left wants the ability to present the ‘progressive’ point of view only and to cover the mistakes of leftist leaders. Bush never would have hear the end of trying to enter the Oval Office through a window or remarking about the “Austrian language.” VP Joe Biden is an incredible disaster that the press can’t get near. The second most important governmental job has gone to someone who simply can’t remember facts. ( )

CNN would love to keep the Obama mistakes and the Biden gaffes from public view. The internet and Fox will hold them accountable and will embarrass them should they ignore important stories that are damaging to the progressive view.
