Health Care Legislation On The Brink

Health Care legislation appears to have stalled somewhat, with the Senate no longer planning to vote on the bill before the August recess, and the house likely to follow suit, dealing a major blow to Obama’s stated objectives and making ultimate passage of the bill far more difficult.

In the Senate, the finance committee is working on a “bi-partisan” compromise (bi-partisan means three Senators).  The finance committee chair, Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) has promised that the bill would be voted out of committee by the August 7 recess, but in order to do that, a compromise has to be reached this week, so that markup of the bill can take place next week.

Over in the house, the Blue Dogs are still holding their own, not yet moving much closer to a compromise.  It is also likely that the bill will not be voted out of the House Energy and Finance Committee before the recess, angering speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).  She has threatened to bypass the committee entirely and pull the bill directly for a floor vote.  If she tries this, all hell will likely break loose, and you will see infighting among the Democrats like never before.  Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN), a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, contents that San Fran Nan doesn’t have the votes to pass the legislation in its current form, and he is likely right.

The August recess will provide opponents of the bill to galvanize even more opposition to it.  With Obama’s approval rating now below 50%, and his popularity continuing to decline, coupled with the unpopularity of the health care legislation itself, Obama’s political capital is somewhat spent at this point.  While passage is still possible, people are angry and most people don’t want this bill.  As  congressmen and women go home to their constituents in August, they will likely hear much protesting against the bill.  Hopefully, this will cause Blue Dogs to entrench, and take a stand against the Obama Administration and the far-left policies of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.  Even with such large majorities, it is now more than possible that this Health Care Bill, in its current form, will go down in defeat.
