Is This Obama’s “Read My Lips” Moment?

“Read My Lips.  NO NEW TAXES.”  This was one of George H.W. Bush’s most infamous campaign slogans during the 1988 Presidentail campaign.  It was a memorable pledge, it received lots of airtime, and it came back to bite him in a big way, possibly costing him reelection in 1992.

Now, Obama is on the verge of having history repeat itself, but this time a Democrat is in the driver’s seat.  During the 2008 campaign, McCain tried to point out that there was no way possible to pay for Obama’s ambitious agenda without raising taxes.  Obama scoffed, and repeated what became his mantra for the campaign (h/t: InstaPundit), that if you make under $250,0o0, your taxes will not go up.  Now, if what Tim Geithner says is true, Obama may be reneging on that pledge (which comes as no surprise to any of us here at Axis of Right).

Obama’s agenda was always to spend, spend, spend.  Yet, he somehow as able to convince the American people that even with all of that spending, their taxes would not go up.  With the bailouts, stimulus, mortgage programs, cash-for-clunkers, and now health care, it all has to get paid for somehow.  Geithner’s admission is what we Conservatives always expected anyways, and if it comes to fruition, will be the single biggest flip-flop of Obama’s presidency.  If it comes to pass, let’s hope Obama meets the same fate as the elder President Bush.

If all things were equal, I’d think that this would definitely be Obama’s “Read my Lips” moment. I still think Republicans through 527s or individual Congressional campaigns or even the RNC should begin running those ads immediately after the Dems vote to raise taxes. I don’t have enough faith in the weak-kneed Right yet to be confident they’d make an issue out of this, plus the MSM will avert their eyes and start to whistle.

Plus, remember that all of our taxes were going to go up anyway. I never trusted Obama’s campaign rhetoric for the obvious reasons, but more importantly there was a huge glaring contradiction:

If no one who makes under $250,000 will see a dime of their income taxes go up, then what happens in 2011 when the Bush tax-cuts (which Obama also campaigned on rescinding) expire? Everyone who makes over $30,000 a year will see their income taxes necessarily go up! It was a contradiction dating back to the early campaign.

Of course, taxes wouldn’t have to go up if we just stopped spending in Washington… just a thought.
