Get Seniors Opposing Obamacare and it’s Toast

by Ryan on August 5, 2009

“Make the anti-Obamacare argument about seniors and watch them vote the right way next year” is one notion I’ve started hearing from conservative circles on how to expand the anti-Obamacare grassroots base.  Helping in this effort is an ad that Dick Morris wants you to see which focuses on seniors:

After following his four-step process for action during this August recess, he also wants you to donate to the League of American Voters, who make ads like these possible.  He’s got a great point on this one.

In the last two months the Right has awakened the sensible concerned middle class citizen, now let’s broaden the base to include seniors!  Pretty soon even those half-witted, mind-numbed Millennials will be on board (no promises on that one though — they still chant O-BA-MA! O-BA-MA! while waiting in line for their unemployment checks).

Video states: Obama plan covers 50,000,000 more Americans & adds no more Doctors. We already have a better Dr-to-patient ratio than Canada, so… what’s the argument, again?

Canada has longer lifespan and lower costs then we do. Canada has long elective surgery wait times compared to us, but at least they cover everybody, not leave a huge part of the citizenry uninsured.

Uninsured Americans go to a ER with average $900 per patient per visit cost, compared to $96 cost for a visit to a primary care physician. They also defer care until there is a medical crisis that typically costs much more to treat than care given on a preventive basis.

Clearly, uninsured care is MORE EXPENSIVE than a plan which covers all.

This whole “rationing” argument is stupid. Yes, stupid. There are only so many MD’s, RN’s hospitals, etc. Things are rationed now but in a way that favors the rich, not the general public.

The young subsidize the old, the healthy subsidize the ill – the bigger the group, the lower the overall individual cost & risk. these are basics that explain how a single payer plan, with one administration and the best elements of UK, French, Netherlands and Canada plans can save us huge money and provide decent care.

George W. Bush approved Medicare D, a huge giveaway to big pharma companies, capping Federal subsidy of our medications. If you like paying more for your meds, go ahead and advocate to defeat healthcare reform.

DON’T BUY THE LIE!!!

“Buy the Lie”, you are so right! How much is Dick Morris making off this one? He’s not a conservative, he’ll represent anyone who will pay him enough so he can afford his prostitutes. Yet, his wife still ghostwrites his stuff. I wonder how much he pays her.

I keep getting e-mails against health care reform from the League of American Voters, which cites negative assumptions by the Lewan Group, touted by organizations against health care reform as a non-partisan, independent research group. According to the Washington Post, this is far from true. The Lewan group is a wholly owned subsidiary of the United Healthcare group, one of our countries largest privately owned insurers. United Health owns the Lewan group under its subsidiary Ingenix, an organization that was sued for wide-scale fraud by the state of New York in 2008. In fact, every anti-health care reform organization that I have researched to date has a strong private insurance connection.

The truth needs to come out. People are dying because of lack of affordable health care coverage. I do not understand how right-wing organizations that claim to be the “moral majority” can be so immoral, telling outright lies to gain support for denying coverage to those who do not have it, and hiking premiums and copays to the point where people who do have coverage are forced into bankruptcy as a result of catastrophic illness or injury.

Unfortunately, frightened Americans are buying into these lies to their own detriment. The bottom line is that people believe sound bites created by organizations, which I have heard spend about $1 million per day to spread lies while those who understand the need for reform do not have the huge amounts of money needed to negate this information.

PLEASE, if you believe the sound bites you hear, all I ask is that you take the time to perform your own research. You will be surprised at the absurdity of anti-health care reform claims, and the soundness of a plan to use technology — a real-time data review system to check for fraud and abuse at the “point of sale” (when care is provided) to weed out waste and fraud in our current medicare system, which is estimated to cost taxpayers a whopping $486 billion this year alone.

We need health care reform. While a single-payer plan is off the table, this would be the best way to control costs for everyone. Those who want to continue to be gouged by private insurers, where some CEOs pocket more than $100k per HOUR, would be free to do so.

As a former health insurer employee, I know that profit comes from denying all possible claims. I also know that health care reform would have a postitive impact on our overall economy in the long term.

Thank you for allowing my input on this critical issue.

League of American Voters, brought to you by the Swiftboat folks, recently sent an email plea for contributions. The email:
Dear Friend:

Are Obama and his friends taking you as a fool?

You have to wonder what they really think about the intelligence of the American people.

Obama repeatedly has out-and-out lied about his healthcare plan.

Here are just 5 of the big whoppers.

Lie #1: ‘You Keep Your Doctor, You Keep Your Insurer’

This is a complete fabrication.

Under plans Obama has backed in the House and the Senate, almost any business can opt their employees into the “public option” — the government health plan.

That means you could lose your insurer. And if your doctor is worth his salt, you’ll lose him or her as well.

Why? Because great doctors probably will not want to get the very low rates the government will pay private doctors who are part of the new government system.

So, without your consent, you very easily could lose your insurer and your doctor.

Lie #2: The Elderly Will Not Face Rationing or Medicare Cuts

More baloney.

In fact, just last week, The New York Times, a very liberal and very pro-Obama newspaper, admitted that fears of rationing for elderly patients are “not irrational.”

The truth is that Obamacare would almost 50 million new patients to government care.

Who would pay for it. You would!

Seniors on Medicare will be the first hit.

Here’s what the Times reported: “Bills now in Congress would squeeze savings out of Medicare, a lifeline for the elderly, on the assumption that doctors and hospitals can be more efficient.”

This means that faceless bureaucrats will decide the type and quality of your care.

It is a very dangerous thing to give your life and well-being over to government bureaucrats!

Imagine if you or a loved one is older than 80 years and critically needs heart surgery.

Instead of getting the heart procedure, you or that loved one could be informed that you are simply too old.

We at the League of American Voters have been warning of this danger and have a powerful TV commercial exposing the risks to seniors.

You can see the ad by Going Here Now

Lie #3: There Will Be No “Death Panels.”

More lies.

Sure, they don’t call them “death panels” in the legislation, but that’s what their job will be.

These committee members will set guidelines with which faceless bureaucrats will make decisions about you and your healthcare.

They will decide who lives and who dies. They decide who gets critical procedures and expensive medicines.

Again, according to the New York Times, the Democratic plans call for saving money by creating new oversight committees.

The Times says that Medicare and insurers would be expected to follow “advice from a new federal panel of medical experts on ‘what treatments work best.’”

Again, this very liberal paper concluded: “The zeal for cutting health costs, combined with proposals to compare the effectiveness of various treatments and to counsel seniors on end-of-life care, may explain why some people think the legislation is about rationing, which could affect access to the most expensive services in the final months of life.”

Expose the lies — Go Here Now.

Lie #4: The Obama Plan Contains Costs

Absolute nonsense.

The Obama plan will cost more than $1 trillion in new federal outlays, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

This past weekend, Sen. Joe Lieberman claimed that most of this cost comes from adding 50 million people, currently uninsured, to the government health system.

But as Lieberman pointed out, we just don’t have the money to do this right now.

You can add only so many people to the government system by cutting medical care to seniors on Medicare and raising taxes.

Democrats clearly plan to do both.

Lie #5: Illegals Are Not Covered by Obamacare

President Obama has stated time and again that illegal aliens are not covered under his new plan.

Still, Democrats say they want to add almost 50 million uninsured. Yet almost one-quarter of these uninsured are illegal aliens.

None of the Democratic plans excludes illegal aliens.

In fact, when Republicans proposed an amendment to the House plan to block illegals from getting free government healthcare, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her minions soundly defeated the motion.

Many, many lies are emanating from Washington today.

This is why the work of the League of American Voters is so critical now.

Dick Morris, the famous Fox News analyst and campaign strategist, says the League is the No. 1 organization today fighting Obamacare.

“Every American who wants to stop Obamacare should join with the League,” Morris says. “They have the best strategy to stop it from becoming law.”

Just two weeks ago, the League’s powerful new TV ad went on the air.

Thanks to your help, it’s already running in 12 states — and it is affecting millions of people.

We believe it is one reason some Democrats are starting to retreat.

But our job is not done.

We must fight the lies.

We must expose the dangers of Obamacare to all Americans.

Please act today by joining the League and donating to us today.

To Donate Go Here Now

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Bob Adams
Executive Director

P.S. Our TV ad, which Dick Morris crafted, is so effective that ABC News refused to run it. If you take a moment to watch the ad, you’ll see why. It simply tells the truth, in the words of a respected medical doctor. Take a minute to watch it — and most importantly, help us continue this battle! To Watch the Ad and Donate — Go Here Now

#1 Employers currently can change your plan bewteen private corps. without your permission. Public option simply provides another option.

#2 The NY Times article states it is an assumption that doctors and hospitals can be more efficient, not that beaurocrats will make one’s decisions for them. With cross-provider patient history sharing and other such reform inclusions, yes, there is efficiency to be had. Simple partisan unlinear conclusions and scaremongering comprises this “lie defense”.

#3 Beaurocrats will recommend treatment that is shown to be effective, not mandate it. What is the problem of an option to follow the advice of a federal panel of medical experts as to what is the most effective treatment?

Key words are, “think the legislation is about rationing,” The paragraph speaks to misperceptions of the cost-cutting, effective treatment analysis and end-of-life care factors. Nowhere is it stated or implied that beaurocrats will decide the type or quality of care.

#4 Here’s the OMB quote: “The size of the fiscal gap is precisely why we must enact fiscally well designed health care reform now,” OMB director Peter Orszag said. Plans are for medical cost cutting versus medical care cutting.

#5 Illegals already get free health care in hospitals’ ERs. Also, HR 3200, specifically bars coverage for illegal immigrants. Section 246 forbids payments “on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.”

We already have “death panels” in the form of insurers that refuse coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, or do not allow procedures. For example, 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan twice taken off the liver transplant list by CIGNA, which said the procedure was “outside the scope of the plan’s coverage.”

More recently, Froma Harrop’s husband, diagnosed with liver cancer, was told point blank that in her husband’s case, there was but one place to go, a specialized chemotherapy program at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, which was only 50 minutes away. United Healthcare refused to pay for it, but instead, it directed the Harrops to a small, local hospital unequipped to deal with this kind of cancer. She reports that naively, they tried to use the appeals system only to be rejected by insurance “handlers.” As Harrop put it, “Toward the end, he [her husband] said to me, ‘You know, fighting the insurance company was worse than fighting the cancer.’”

In an aside, Harrop noted that in 2006 “William ‘Dollar Bill’ McGuire, CEO of parent-company UnitedHealth Group, walked off with a $1.1 billion golden parachute (on top of the $500 million he had already raked in) — though he had to return some of it in an options backdating scandal.

Years ago, a coworker’s beautiful 21-year-old daughter was denied a bone marrow transplant; with no way to raise the money on her own, her daughter died as a result. These are not isolated incidents.

Lieberman says to wait until the recession ends? Seems to me, we can also wait on using our tax dollars to pay for his health care coverage, which he can well afford on his own.

It also appears he believed we didn’t have to “wait” for the big-ticket items such as bailing out big business, but it’s just fine to let Americans die.

The Urban Institute estimated that 22,000 adults died in 2006 because they did not have health insurance.

And more bad news from Families USA: “Across the US, the numbers who die from lack of health care is twice that of people who die from homicides.”

And “uninsured Americans are sicker, uninsured adults are 25 percent more likely to die prematurely, and Americans between 55 and 64 are at much greater risk of premature death than their insured counterparts. This makes lack of health insurance the third leading cause of death for the near-elderly, following heart disease and cancer.”

How much are human lives worth? This is a matter of life or death, and NOT the bottom line.

Who is kidding whom? Lieberman may be able to wait, but thousands of Americans cannot! Stop the lies. Support what is right. I don’t know how those profiteering from killing American citizens can sleep at night.

Crappy health care for everyone. That would be a good slogan. That’s why the pro health care foundations always have the U.S. rated down on the world list. Another country will be rated higher because “everyone has medical insurance”. The hospital might have a dirt floor and no equipment but everyone has it.

KR – it’s brilliant how you tie one thng to another that has nothing do do with it! Why do you hate your fellow citizens and don’t want them to have health care? What are you afraind of??

Infant mortality and average lifespan are TWO KEY indicators of national health. Check BOTH on CIA Factbook, You will find that we trail behind ALL our industrial peers. They ALL have national health insurance or a form of socialized care.

So, again, what are you afraid of??? WHAT???

Now look, I know that a national care or government option needs monitoring. No system is perfect, but our peers have a system. We have health care for the rich, and nothing but chaos for everyone else.

I’m For Healthcare reform, but vehemently opposed to Government run Healthcare! My reasons for opposing the current plan[s] are as follows:
1. The public is being misled about the current Healthcare proposal[s].
• President Obama has stated time and again that illegal aliens are not covered under his new plan. Democrats say they want to add almost 50 million uninsured. Yet almost one-quarter of these uninsured are illegal aliens. None of the Democratic plans exclude illegal aliens, or provide a verification requirement if language excludes illegal aliens. In fact, when Republicans proposed an amendment to the House plan to block illegals from getting free government healthcare, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her minions soundly defeated the motion. Also, the Democrats have defeated attempts to include a verification requirement. The result of the latter – the door is left wide open for widespread abuse, which will happen!
• You can keep your doctor & insurer. Technically correct, but very misleading & impractical. Under plans Obama has backed in the House and the Senate, almost any business can opt their employees into the “public option” — the government health plan. And why wouldn’t businesses, especially if the Government is paying for healthcare. That means you could lose your insurer. And if your doctor is worth his salt, you’ll lose him or her as well. Why? Because great doctors probably will not want to get the very low rates the government will pay private doctors who are part of the new government system. So, without your consent, you very easily could lose your insurer and your doctor.
• The Elderly Will Not Face Rationing or Medicare Cuts. Recently, the New York Times, a very liberal and very pro-Obama newspaper, admitted that fears of rationing for elderly patients are “not irrational.” The truth is that Obamacare would convert almost 50 million new patients to government care. Who would pay for it. We would! Seniors on Medicare will be the first hit. Here’s what the Times reported: “Bills now in Congress would squeeze savings out of Medicare, a lifeline for the elderly, on the assumption that doctors and hospitals can be more efficient.” This means that faceless bureaucrats will decide the type and quality of your care. It is a very dangerous thing to give your life and well-being over to Government bureaucrats!
• The Obama Plan Contains Costs. Absolute nonsense!! The Obama plan will cost more than $1 trillion in new Federal outlays, according to the nonpartisan CBO. How will this noble program be funded? This increases the estimated $9 trillion defecit to over $10 trillion, & that doesn’t account for the monies owed SS, Medicare, & Medicaid. If the objective is to bankrupt our country, we’re doing an outstanding job!
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that ObamaCare will cost over $1 trillion. Notwithstanding President Obama’s promise to oppose legislation “if that reform adds even one dime to our deficit over the next decade,” the CBO estimates that recent House proposals will increase government spending by $1.04 trillion. Additionally, as for the Administration’s most recent cost-savings plan – to create an independent advisory council to set Medicare fees – the CBO concluded that “the probability is high that no savings would be realized”. In addition, ObamaCare will dramatically reduce the choices one has over the cost and quality of their health insurance plan. Fix the current system; don’t create a new system which has the Government involved in competing with the private sector!

2. Government doesn’t have a track record of running any program effectively & efficiently; instead it grossly mismanages [maybe destroys is a better term] programs. E.g.,
SOCIAL SECURITY: On life support, courtesy of the Democratic party.
• Social Security money moved from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ & put into the General fund so that Congress could spend it [Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate].
• Income tax deduction eliminated for Social Security (FICA) withholding [The Democratic Party].
• Started taxing Social Security annuities [The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote, as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the USA].
• Started giving annuity payments to immigrants! Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments, even though they never paid a dime into it! [Jimmy Carter & the Democratic Party].
Throughout all this Congress made certain their retirement fund was kept in tact.
MEDICARE: Projected to be insolvent by 2017. Again, thanks to Congresses’ profligate spending.
US POSTAL SERVICE [vis-à-vis FEDEX & UPS]. Not even close.
NEAR COLLAPSE OF OUR FINFNCIAL SYSTEM: Root cause originated with the Democratic Party.
Decided [under the Clinton Admin.] to have Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae make loans to persons who couldn’t afford housing, then have certain Congressional members & managers testify there was no problem, when this action eventually turned out to be the root cause of our recent & current financial problems. If my facts are correct, executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac received/will receive $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that’s $45 million more than the AIG bonuses – not a bad take. The President was outraged about bonuses to big bankers and the American automobile manufacturers, yet some of the ‘masters of disaster’ in Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelic, fail to get mention whatsoever. No dual standard here.
3. Government can’t make accurate predictions, E.g.,
STIMULUS PACKAGE: Congress passed the largest spending Bill in American History without taking time to read it because it just had to be passed ASAP to keep the unemployment rate at or below ca. 8%. After only 5 months, the unemployment rate rose to 9.5%.
FUTURE BUDGET DEFECIT: Ca. 6 months ago, the deficit was projected to be 7 trillion dollars; it’s now projected to be ca. 9 trillion. More than a rounding error.

What will convince me that Congress truly believes the Healthcare Reform package that eventually surfaces is good is when the SAME Healthcare package applies to both Congress, & the citizenry they represent.

Why should members of Congress, the Administration, etc. be entitled to better retirement benefits and healthcare than the citizens they work for????? As an employee, I had the option to secure the same health coverage as my superiors, but not better than my superiors. Apparently this doesn’t apply to Congress or the Administration. The elite provisions Congress currently enjoys should be repealed.

When did our beloved Country move from Of, By, & For the People to Of, By & For an Elite few [our Government]?

I appreciate the comments from Leo. I agree that concerns about Medicare funding are valid. We need to change much about our systems, from who gets taxed (and how little), and much much more. Leos comments are valid, based on his views. Further, I greatly appreciate the open nature of this site, allowing comments to post without censure. Thank you.

However, I also appreciate the comments posted refruting “conservative” statements of this site. I sincerely thank those with the dedication to post their comments on a site oriented towards restricting health care, stating concerns about laws favoring the rich, the lobbyists, and for-profit insurance companies.

Leo wrote: “Democrats say they want to add almost 50 million uninsured. Yet almost one-quarter of these uninsured are illegal aliens”. Based on a site I found, about 15% of the uninsured are illegals. That amounts to less than 7,000,000, not the almost 12,500,000 cited by Leo.

Additionally, the $1 Trillion cost for insuring (exactly) 46 million Americans is spread out over 10 years. This amounts to $2,173.91 per person per year. Compare that to $7,500 per year for each American we pay now. Now, I assume the $1Trillin is understated. Even if it’s twice as much it’s a bargain compared to what we pay now.

If the choice is death or pay $2173.91, I choose to pay the $2173.91, whether thru taxes or personal/employer payments. Thank you.
