Obama Urges Burma to Release Aung San Suu Kyi

During his recent trip to Singapore, President Obama urged the Prime Minister of Burma to release pro-democracy dissident Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.  Given Obama’s warped sense of good and evil and his tendency throw his support behind some pretty shady characters, the request must have been a bit surprising for the Burmese.  I can only hope that we finally found a foreign leader who takes our Presdident seriously and that Suu Kyi is released.

They say a broken clock is right twice a day.  Now I’m not about give President Obama as much credit as a broken clock, but I will give credit where credit is due.  Our President finally meddled spoke up on behalf of those fighting for freedom against tyranny.  But why in this case when he has repeatedly refused to do so as President?

I think Obama spoke up because U2′s Bono, an entertainer with liberal street cred, took up Aung San Suu Kyi’s cause during his 360 tour.  With cover from Bono, Obama probably thought that he could be seen using the Presidency’s bully pulpit without offending his kook base.  What Obama didn’t understand is that although Bono is a liberal, he’s also a decent guy.  I guess Bono tricked Dear Leader into doing the right thing, even if the right thing involved nothing more than speaking up.  It is indeed a beautiful day.
