Spendaholic President to Propose “Spending Freeze”

President Obama is planning to announce a three year freeze in discretionary spending at the upcoming State of the Union.  The President’s supporters and the mainstream media (Department of Redundancy Department I know) will undoubtedly fawn over the proposal as a return to fiscal responsibility.  They won’t tell the entire story though.  Like so many other Obama proposals, the proposed spending freeze is nothing more than a smoke and mirrors ploy designed to trick voters who pay minimal attention to politics into thinking that the Chosen One is the moderate they voted for.

A discretionary spending freeze is commendable, but it doesn’t change the fact that it comes on the heels one of the biggest government spending sprees in American history.  True, mounting deficits were a problem when Obama took office, but this President accelerated the spending policies that landed our country into this mess in the first place and tripled the federal deficit in the process.  A shopaholic teenager wouldn’t have the audacity to tell her enraged parents that she was financially responsible merely because she promised to stop future spending on their credit cards she just maxed out.  Yet somehow this President does have the audacity to say just that to the country.

And that isn’t even what Obama’s promising.  Another aspect of the spending freeze the President and his supporters will ignore is the fact that the proposed freeze is limited to discretionary spending which accounts for about fifteen percent of the federal budget.  So in effect, the president’s proposed spending freeze would be like that shopaholic teenager telling her parents that she’ll stop spending on their credit cards, but only at some of the stores she frequents.  Meanwhile, the spending continues and interest on the debt continues to pile up.

Discretionary spending freeze?  Fine.  But he’s going to have to do better than that.  But come November, the voters are still going to tell Obama he’s grounded.

To top it off, it’s only certain discretionary spending that he’s freezing. There are about 5 or 6 different exclusions. Also, this is no different than Obama’s 10-year budget projection introduced last year, which contained “Freezes” for three years after ballooning the deficit in 2009/2010.
