Bayh Bayh Evan Bayh

Republican chances in the 2010 Senate elections look better every day and today is no exception.  The Washington Post is reporting that Evan Bayh is about to announce that he will not seek re-election later this year.

This is excellent news for the country and for conservatives.  Although Bayh was no longer as safe as he used to be, he was a well-known and well-funded incumbent that would have been difficult to defeat.  (No, I do not put stock in the Daily Kos poll showing Bayh 20 points ahead and apparently neither does Bayh; Rasmussen has always been more reliable)  With Indiana now an open seat in an anti-Democrat year, the Republicans will probably be favored to win the seat and are now free to spend valuable resources elsewhere.  It will be interesting to see if the electoral battlefield expands as a result of Indiana.

UPDATE: Turns out Bayh really shafted his party with this one.  The filing deadline in Indiana is Friday and the deadline to collect signatures is tomorrow.
