8.8 Quake Hits Chile

A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile at about 3:34am local time.  Aftershocks have followed throughout the morning, day and now into the night.  The power of the quake set off a tsunami which is (at the very moment I write this post) hitting Hawaii with about an 8-foot swell.  Because of the new early warning systems, the people of Hawaii have been preparing for the small tsunami since 6am local time (11am EST).

The latest death toll in Chile is just over 200 people at this moment, but you know how these stories go — the numbers will rise.  Chile itself is in a “state of catastrophe” and will need our thoughts, prayers and help in the days and weeks to come.
