Rue McClanahan Passes Away

Rue McClanahan passed away early this morning after suffering a stroke.  She was 76.  Those of you older than me may remember McClanahan for her role opposite Bea Arthur on Maude.  But most people, especially those of us who grew up in the 1980s, will best remember McClanahan for her role as Blanche Devereaux on the NBC sitcom, The Golden Girls.

Blanche was the vain slut who always pretended to be younger than she really was.  That provided tons of comedic fodder for the witty Dorothy Zbornak, blunt Sophia Petrillo, and naive Rose Nylund.  There are plenty of clips out there that show Blanche wanting to sleep with someone, but the following clip of Blanche not sleeping is actually my favorite Blanche moment.

Sadly, recent years have not been kind to the actresses on the Golden Girls.  Bea Arthur (Dorothy) left us a little over a year ago and Estelle Getty (Sophia) died in late 2008.  With McClanahan’s passing, Betty White (Rose) is now the only Golden Girl still with us.  Thankfully, Betty is still going strong.  Just a few weeks ago, she hosted the funniest episode of SNL in years after delighting the country during a Super Bowl commercial.

Today though, the world is a little emptier without Rue McClanahan.  May she rest in peace.
