Bob Sheppard, the longtime New York Yankees public address announcer, passed away this morning at the age of 99.

When I received the news a few minutes ago, it felt like a punch in the gut because like most Yankee fans, a part of my childhood died with Mr. Sheppard.  Generations of Yankee fans, from those in the 1950s who heard him introduce a roster that included Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, to those of today who remember Sheppard introducing Don Mattingly and still hear his recording announcing Derek Jeter, will never forget the voice of Sheppard.  Whether he was announcing lineups, delivering news of world events like the death of President Reagan, or calling for prayer in the aftermath of September 11, hearing Bob Sheppard’s voice, “the Voice of God”, was always inseparable from the Yankee Stadium experience.

If you’re a Yankee fan, the following tribute will give you goosebumps and might even bring tears to your eyes.  Rest in peace Mr. Sheppard.
