Bloomberg’s “Cowboy Hat and a Shotgun”

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is a perfect example for term limits, not just for his unabashed support for the Ground Zero mosque, but for what he said a week ago on his radio show.  I live in the NYC media market and heard nothing about Bloomberg’s gaffe until today!

Everybody knows that Amerindian reservations/casinos, etc. can sell tobacco products tax-free, as they are protected under federal law and treaties, but Governor Paterson has designs on lifting the reservation’s tax-free status (get ready churches and synagogues, you’re next!).  Mayor Bloomberg, however, had his own thoughts on this issue (my emphasis):

“I’ve said this to David Paterson, I said, ‘You know, get yourself a cowboy hat and a shotgun,’” said Bloomberg, blasting from the hip on his weekly radio show.

If there’s ever a great video, it’s you standing in the middle of the New York State Thruway saying, you know, ‘Read my lips – the law of the land is this, and we’re going to enforce the law.’”

Using “cowboy hat and a shotgun” in reference to how to treat Amerindians?  Really?  These tribes always get out of attempts by greedy big local governments to milk them, so these statements are stupid, require a public apology to New York’s tribes, and are another reason why Mayor Mike needs to find another job.
