Andy Gray Is a Dirty Old Man

I just saw West Ham United hand the Carling Cup semifinal to Birmingham City.  For some reason, I’m still in a soccer state of mind so here comes a soccer post.  Well, sort of.

Anyone who watches English soccer or has ever played an EA Sports FIFA video game is familiar with Andy Gray.  On the air, he is a knowledgeable and humorous soccer commentator.  In the video game, he sounds like  an entertaining, harmless, Scottish goofball, like Rowdy Roddy Piper.   So when I first read that he was fired from Sky Sports soccer coverage for inappropriate remarks he made to female coworker, I thought that it must be political correctness run amok.

Sadly, no.  Andy Gray is a dirty old man.  (WARNING:  It’s probably not a good idea to watch the video in the link at work).  Family Guy’s Peter Griffin probably wouldn’t have said what Gray did.   I’m one of those people who think people are offended way too easily, but I’ll side with the feminists on this one.  Gray may deliver unintentional comedy better than most, but his actions are inexcusable, especially when they are part of a pattern.

*Deadspin has a good retrospective of Andy Gray’s broadcasting career.
