Jon Kyl to Retire

Yesterday, the Democrats learned that one of their incumbent Senators would not seek re-election.  Today, it’s the Republicans’ turn.  At noon today, Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona will announce that he will not seek re-election.

This isn’t as much of a blow to the GOP as Jim Webb’s retirement is to the Democrats because Arizona is still a red state.  Nevertheless, it is much easier to win an election when your party runs an incumbent.

The GOP should still be favored to hold the seat in 2012, but it will be interesting to see who the parties nominate.  Let’s hope Gabrielle Giffords is eager to resume her job in the House of Representatives after she recovers.
