Haley Barbour Not Running for President

Mississippi Governor and former RNC Chairman Haley Barbour has announced that he will not run for President in 2012.  According to Barbour, he decided against running because he was not prepared to make the ten-year commitment necessary to do so.

Some are suggesting that Barbour’s decision will benefit Mitch Daniels, but I disagree.  Barbour’s strength as a politician is his ability to clearly articulate conservative policy positions and persuasively draw distinctions between our positions and those of our liberal friends.  The voters Barbour would have attracted are those looking for in-depth policy analysis.  Whatever his numerous other flaws may be, Newt Gingrich is the policy wonk best suited to fill the void left by Barbour.

I am currently undecided on who I want as the Republican challenger to Obama.  However, I was hoping to have Haley Barbour as an option.  He is right on most of the issues and has the likability necessary to get elected.  Our bench is shallower today.
