T-Paw Declawed and Drops Out

Tim Pawlenty’s campaign was devastated after finishing third in the Iowa Straw Poll yesterday and decided to make it official this morning that he will end his bid for the 2012 Republican nomination for President.

Being bested by local nemesis and crowd favorite Michelle Bachmann as well as the zany Ron Paul (whose zealous supporters are few but show up) was bad for Pawlenty’s campaign, but add Rick Perry to the race and Pawlenty’s got nowhere to go.

Since the GOP race is apt to turn into a Romney vs. Perry fight with Bachmann poking her head in once in a while to keep them honest, and with Marco Rubio already the fan-favorite for the Veep-stakes, Pawlenty made the right move in my opinion by dropping out now rather than wasting everyone’s time moving forward.

I thought Pawlenty sounded like a vice presidential candidate during his speech yesterday, and that may be what is in his future. He may lack that je ne sais quoi that a President needs, but he gives a good interview, is an excellent attack dog, won and governed in an electorally-valuable light blue state, and is acceptable to all factions of the GOP. He wouldn’t be a good running mate for some candidates (e.g. Romney, Bachmann), but could be for someone else. Rick Perry maybe?
