“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Announcement Trailer

Yup, I geeked solidly when I saw this today:

The trailer moves a little slow, doesn’t show much about where the story is going, and alludes to a few vaguely important moments.  The Lord of the Rings announcement trailer was kind of weak too.  Then again, The Hobbit book was released in the 1930s, so if someone wants to know what happened, just ask around!

Peter Jackson split the movie into two parts (the other slated for Christmas 2013) in order to fully explain much of what was happening behind the scenes in the book and give justice to some of the characters and events lifted from the 1970s cartoon film.  As a fan of the material, I appreciate that since there will be something new even for the initiated.

Prequels can be tough, however, but unlike our Star Wars experience, The Hobbit movie is being shaped by actual decades-old material millions of people already love, not from the ever shifting and incessantly revisionist mind of George Lucas.

“Give justice to some of the characters and events lifted from the 1970s cartoon film?” I haven’t seen it in a while but my recollection is that it played the novel pretty straight. Of what characters and events do you speak?
