Half-Staff for Houston

I have my issues with my governor from time to time, mostly on little details here and there.  But, for the most part Chris Christie is doing a fine job.

However, I’m not with him on this one — he wants flags across New Jersey to fly at half-staff for Newark native, the late Whitney Houston.  Saying that she is a person of cultural importance to New Jersey (certainly better than JWOWW, Snooki and the Situation), Christie wants to acknowledge her contribution.

It bugs me a bit because the last dozen or so times the flag has been lowered, it dealt with Jersey natives who died fighting in Afghanistan or a serving legislator who passed away.  Lowering the flag in this particular case kind of cheapens the act in that context — I didn’t even know Houston was from Jersey until she died!

I’m not sure what Christie’s trying to do here, but it seems awkward.
