It’s 420

April 20.  Anniversary of the BP Oil Spill, Columbine, Apollo 16 landing on the moon and infamously, Hitler’s birthday.  This year we mark the 100th anniversary of opening day at Fenway Park in Boston.

But to many, it’s just 420:  an excuse to make marijuana jokes, innuendos, and spark up conversation about legalizing the stinky weed.  I understand the libertarian arguments for its legalization and think on some level we do need to reassess the War on Drugs just as much as the War on Poverty.

However, the last thing Americans need right now is another legal method to numb ourselves from the seriousness of our age.  There’s been too much of that for too long.  The abdication of personal responsibility, over-indulgence, and a general refusal to grow up have helped to put us in this mess.  Legalization advocates tend to manifest those traits while feebly attempting to bogart the high-ground on this issue.

Legalize it or not, a problem of soul remains and until society sorts that out the only thing I’ll be rolling on 420 is my eyes.
