The Catholic Church Strikes Back

The Catholic Church is not a fan of the contraception mandate required under Obamacare.  So, they recently decided to take action.  Forty-three organizations have filed twelve separate lawsuits against the provision.  Two Catholic universities have decided that the extra insurance cost warrants dropping student coverage altogether!  Here’s the beginning of the First Amendment (my emphasis added) which is at the heart of all this:

Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; …

Religion is the first to appear in our nation’s most coveted amendment — not speech, press, assembly, or petition.  It’s the highlighted clause above that the contraception mandate clearly violates since the church is not being allowed to freely exercise their religion without punitive actions from the state.

I like seeing the RCC being proactive in attempting to eliminate that part of Obamacare for both moral and political reasons:  morally, the mandate is wrong, and what a political slap up-side the head the Obama Nation is getting from a major Democratic voting bloc!  Isolated this issue may not swing too many votes, but taken with everything else this continued debate/civic action cannot be helping the left.

However, I do feel there is a bit of karma in all of this — the RCC generally supported Obamacare back in the day as being a compassionate piece of legislation.  Yet, like nearly everyone else the RCC apparently didn’t read the bill either and was surprised to find out what was in it.  On the other hand, that prior acceptance gives the RCC’s gripe real credibility.
