College Football Playoff Coming Soon

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) commissioners have met with some university presidents and decided to have a four-game playoff to decide the national championship for the 2014 season.  No longer will #1 play #2 for the right to claim a national championship;  #1 will play #4, #2 will play #3, then advance to a national final.

I can see both sides of the argument to either keep or toss the current BCS system.  That being said, I think that if the BCS is going to have a football playoff they should have a real playoff with all the conference leaders and a few at-large teams going at it for a few weeks.  For now, I also understand the baby-steps the BCS is taking — this could either be a mess or be a huge success.  They could always add more teams if it works.

As someone who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into supporting a college football playoff, I don’t think this proposed is bad at all. By limiting the field to just four teams, it preserves the importance of the regular season.

American sports are the best in the world, but we are too addicted to playoffs. Any league should try to be played under a system designed to crown the best team as its champion. Too many playoff teams prevents that from happening. The NHL and NBA, and increasingly MLB are too much of a crapshoot.

So, please, keep this playoff at four teams so that every game during the season remains intense.
