Movie Review — Skyfall

The 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, hit theaters this weekend.  While I’m not a superfan of the entire franchise, I do generally like Bond films.  I also like Daniel Craig as the latest Bond — more gritty and fierce.  Here’s the trailer:

If you liked the recent Bond films, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, you will definitely like SkyfallSkyfall has the same Bond formula, lots of action, lots of babes, all while adding to the depths of the main characters, introducing new ones along the way.  A major theme in Skyfall dealt with the consequence of experience — long careers making both friends and enemies eventually catching up with you.  I did get the feeling multiple times that they could end the franchise with this movie, while at the same time leaving the door open for another, more classic-feeling sequel.

While a really entertaining film, I occasionally got the sense that I’d been there before.  Formulaic.  Predictable.  Not big enough.  Not deep enough.  Casino Royale was about as good Bond film as one can get (I have s soft spot for Eva Green so I may be a little biased).  Quantum expanded the new Bond world introduced in Casino and tied up a number of loose ends — it was very much a sequel.  Skyfall seems more self-contained, and also smaller in a way because it is primary driven as a personal story.  Maybe you’ll like that.  At the end of the day, I enjoyed Skyfall and so should you.  I’ll give it an A- and recommend this two-plus-hour action-packed ride.
