More Republican Soul Searching — Buchanan-Style!

The recently wounded and defeated GOP is thinking about caving on taxes in the face of th impending “fiscal cliff.”  Pat Buchanan has a few things to say about this in a recent article, which speaks truth to the GOP.  It’s a superb piece that House Republicans need to read.  The GOP is positioning itself to accept Obama’s “extortion,” abandon its principles, and share in the blame of whatever may come January 1.   Buchanan argues they don’t have to and offers some solutions to Boehner and crew.

If there’s one thing Pat Buchanan has right, it’s that the Republican Party is in trouble.  On its current trajectory, Buchanan believes the GOP has about 20-50 years left.  In Suicide of a Superpower, Buchanan argues that being white, aging, milquetoast, and Democrat-lite are a sure-fire ways to becoming Whigs.  I completely agree.  If the Republicans don’t embrace all-encompassing conservative/libertarian-leaning principles on social issues, states rights, and the economy the GOP is certainly doomed.

To quote Rush Limbaugh, “People are not going to vote against Santa Claus….”  Seventy-plus years of political history shows us that the GOP never wins that battle, yet they’re on the verge of fighting it again.  If the GOP is in the midst of deciding to play the Democrat’s game and embrace an unnecessary losing hand, they’re falling into Obama’s hands, and will lose even more of their own supporters — remember, the people elected them to control House.  The people also voted for Obama — let them finally see what that means.
