Shelley Moore Capito, a popular Republican Congressman has announced that she will challenge the increasingly unpopular Jay Rockefeller in the 2014 West Virginia Senate race.  The GOP has tried to convince her to run for years; in two years, she finally will.

It’s funny how American politics never ends.  We just had a presidential election three weeks ago.  The winners haven’t even been sworn in yet, but people are already making plans to run in 2014.  In about a year, there will be non-stop discussion about the 2014 Senate races, but as this news, the game has already started.

That’s because effective candidate recruitment is essential if a party wants to win.  In the past, the GOP has understood the need to recruit candidates; they just did a horrible job of doing it by trying to force the base to accept candidates who think like Democrats.  As a result, the rank and file rebelled and selected more conservative candidates who tended to share their worldview (you know, the reason why the base is interested in politics in the first place).  Sometimes, the alternatives paid off (e.g. Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Pat Toomey).  Other times, they didn’t (e.g Christine O’Donnell, Sharron Angle, Richard Mourdock).

But what about Capito?  Some misinformed conservatives are already complaining that she isn’t conservative enough.  Although she isn’t as conservative as I am, I think the criticism is unfair because Capito has stood firm in opposing the most radical elements of the left’s agenda.  She opposed the stimulus, Obamacare, and TARP.  She does have a tendency to vote for some of the smaller increases in pork spending, and that’s a problem.  But generally speaking, she’s also pro-life on abortion, though weak on the stem cell issue.

She may not be Mike Lee, but she’s also no Mike Castle.  With a successful political career already under her belt, a philosophy generally in line with the right, and high name recognition and popularity, I think Capito would be a fine candidate to challenge Senator We’re going to nationalize health care “regardless of the views of the American people.
