Jovan Belcher’s Murder-Suicide Shakes NFL

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed himself in front of three team officials yesterday outside Arrowhead Stadium.  The obviously disturbed young man had just shot and killed his girlfriend, 22-year old Kasandra Perkins, who also had three-month old daughter.  Belcher drove to work, said thank you to the Chiefs team manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel, then shot himself in the head in the parking lot.

The details are spotty.  From what we know, Perkins came home late from a concert, then something happened.  Belcher killed her, went to work, then killed himself.  The Chiefs went on to play their regular scheduled game today, managing to get their second win of the season.

They are calling this tragic, and it is — young, well-liked NFL player kills a woman, then himself, leaving parentless at three-month-old baby.

This is also disturbing.  Murder-suicides are about as cowardly and selfish an act as one could possibly engage in.  Also, to paraphrase Tom Jackson on ESPN this morning, we knew Belcher was a murderer before he killed himself.  He’s no hero.  He’s no martyr.  So, it was odd hearing the Chiefs players have such positive things to say about him, knowing that that a woman is dead and a child has no parents because of this act.  Obviously, this was so abrupt, most close to him are in shock.  The whole league and millions of fans are too.

Regardless, prayers for all the families and friends of those involved in this incident.
