STD in the City

in Anything Else,Culture,New York City

When there’s something real to report on the fiscal cliff “talks,” I’ll get on that.

In the meantime, apparently sex in New York City is becoming very hazardous.  A new study from New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (mental hygiene, huh?… just a tad Orwellian) indicates that 33% of the city’s 181 zip codes have STD infection rates in the top quintile for the multiple STDs surveyed.  Too bad — lots of foxy babes in NYC.

As it turns out, one should just not touch anything in the Tremont section of the Bronx, which is in the top quintile for all STDs surveyed.  Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan were pretty bad, but nowhere near the Bronx.  Only the borough of Staten Island fared well overall.

The article ends with a question about what should be done to combat these soaring rates.  What do you think?  More government awareness programs?  Free condom distribution (in the Bronx especially)?  Free STD screening centers? Etc.

Perhaps the culture needs to change.  Most of the STDs surveyed show some noticeable symptoms within six to eight weeks, which means one is either having multiple partners before symptoms manifest, one doesn’t care about the nasty symptoms you see, or one’s not telling their partners while still going bareback.  Those scenarios paint a choice and an attitude that a program won’t change.  People will have to change in order to fix a problem like this.
