The highly anticipated film about the search and eventual killing of Osama Bin Laden, Zero Dark Thirty, opened on screens across the country yesterday.  Here’s the trailer:

As you may know, this movie is controversial for some on both sides of the aisle.  Some Democrats (and John McCain, of course) don’t like the “torture” scenes while some Republicans don’t like that the film’s producers had access to classified material.  The Dems seemed to have more influence since the film’s director Kathryn Bigelow was snubbed for an Oscar nomination, though the film itself was nominated for Best Picture.  The Academy are rubes anyway — Bigelow might want to take the snub as a compliment.

I just got back from seeing the film and loved it.  I won’t spoil any of it (though I’m pretty sure you know how it ends).  The film tries to tell a story without getting too political, and doesn’t omit events because they are uncomfortable.  When politics comes into the film, it’s part of the story rather than a merely a statement.  The movie begins on 9/11 and shifts to the CIA in Pakistan a few years later working-over some monsters.  While some American names, tactics, and situations are not fully accurate for national security reasons, real historical events and interrogations, etc., are weaved into the film helping to move us to the climax on May 2, 2011.

The movie was well acted and flowed — plus, Seal Team 6 scene was so cool.  But most of all I found Zero Dark Thirty very interesting.  We’ve all lived through 9/11 and its aftermath, but this peak into the clandestine services was just plain interesting — how they do things, what intel they have to go on, those “black sites,” etc.  I hardly noticed its 157-minute run time!  I wholeheartedly recommend this movie to everyone.  A solid historical movie shadowed with controversy about putting together one of the most satisfying tactical victories of the War on Terror.  A+

PS- nowhere in the Seal Team 6 extraction scene did I see President Obama anywhere in Abbottabad!  Weird, I though he got Bin Laden? Hmm… someone should talk to Bigelow.
