Finally Super Bowl XLVII is Here!

Super Bowl XLVII (or “47″ to us non-Romans) will kick-off tonight at around 6:30 EST, featuring the San Francisco 49ers versus the Baltimore Ravens.

And it’s about time!  All the manufactured hype, hackneyed story lines, politically-tinged distractions, and self-congratulations makes this two-week interregnum nearly intolerable.  Oh, and don’t forget the Pro Bowl sans all the best players from the Super Bowl teams.

By the end, all we can hope for is that the game is at least a good one.  Twenty-one of the 46 Super Bowls have been blowouts of 14 points or more.  However, the Super Bowls have been really good lately — the previous five coming down to the last few minutes.  I expect this one to be good as well.  The Ravens play more consistently than the 49ers, but the 49ers have more raw talent on balance and are coming into the game generally healthier.

At the end of the day I’m not sure who’s going to win.  I have office pool score numbers that will make the SB a bit more enjoyable, but with the Patriots out I don’t have a dog in this race.  Locally, Jersey seems to be going for the Ravens due to Ray Rice’s Rutgers connection.

But, I should provide a prediction.  The Ravens had to beat the Patriots in Foxboro to get here, so they can go to hell.  Go 49ers, 30-24!

Patriots to win!

Hope it’s a good game, though do have to remind you, in our football (rugby), we don’t ponce around in padding and helmets – and when you take the field you have to play 80 minutes of almost continuous play (apart from half time), unless injured.

Sorry guys, couldn’t resist the little dig. :-)

One of these years, have to get over there to watch a game live.

Hey Oz,
I have a feeling once the NFL wussifies the sport to a certain threshold, Americans will yearn for a real contact sport. Rugby will be a great option — similar to the way mixed martial arts (MMA) has replaced boxing.

Have to be honest, I thought the 50 minus 1 er’s might get up.

An educated man I see, if you have some understanding of the rugby appeal.
