Searching For the Mystery Priest

Although this story has been out there for a few days, it seemed to me to fit better on a Sunday.  The gist is that a 19-year old Katie Lentz was trapped in her car after a horrific accident last week on a long stretch of road in Missouri.  As rescue workers were trying to pry her out of the car a Catholic priest showed up, calming and consoling the rescue workers, and anointing Lentz, who asked if everyone could pray with her while they waited for stronger tools to arrive.  Lentz has since been upgraded from critical to serious condition at nearby Blessing Hospital.

What has this story getting national buzz is that the priest soon disappeared from the scene.  He was also missing from the nearly 80 pictures investigators took, which is peculiar because given eye witness accounts the priest was near the action while the pictures were being taken.  The accident was also in a remote area and there aren’t too many Catholic churches out there — this priest should have been easily recognizable (especially given his distinct accent), but no one seemed to know who he was or how he got there.

There are many theories, and the local diocese is being hush, respecting the privacy of their priests.

You can make up your own mind about whether this priest was an angel, St. Padre Pio, or just a humble priest out for a walk in the middle of nowhere at the right place and time with his anointing oil who happened to avoid getting any part of himself in any photo which was taken at the scene.  It’s plausible.  Ockham’s Razor says that the simplest explanation is probably the correct one, but given eye witness accounts and his abrupt disappearance, the simplest explanation doesn’t seem so simple.

UPDATE:  They found the mystery priest — Fr. Patrick Dowling!  Turns out, Fr. Dowling (from Ireland, which explains the accent) gave his name to one of the responders, but it never got passed along.
