The Sad Case of the Woman Behind the DC Car Chase

Miriam Carey was shot and killed by Capitol police yesterday.  Carey was involved in a chaotic car chase on the Hill after she tried to breach a barrier at the White House.  A one-year-old girl was in the car at the time.  Carey was a 34-year-old dental hygienist working in Stamford CT.   She may have been suffering from postpartum depression which resulted in delusions — apparently she thought President Obama was stalking her.  She had no real criminal history and was generally considered “happy” by those who knew her.

Everyone has differing degrees of stress, but what makes a person snap while others cope?  That’s a bit too deep for me to give an adequate or learned response.

However, with all of the recent mass shootings, we’ve seen clearly mentally ill people (Loughner, Holmes, Lanza, and Alexis) showing multiple warning signs before perpetrating their crimes.  Then this.  No signs, just a snap — possibly brought on by mental illness should postpartum depression be found to be a cause.  Yet, postpartum depression is a temporary state.  Perfectly rational people do crazy things too.

Even if mental illness is found not to have played a part in this I still believe that our culture really needs to take mental illness much more seriously.  Plus, if someone you know is going through some hard times, talking to them or giving them some positive attention can’t hurt either.
