Peter Jackson’s second piece to the Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, opens in theaters Friday, December 13.  Here is the official trailer:

Can’t wait!  For those who have read the book, you know that one long Hobbit movie would have to cut so much out that it was definitely worth having two films — the first ending around the spiders scene in Mirkwood.  With three movies, Jackson had to invent characters (the Pale Orc) and cover side stories (Gandalf and Radagast in Dol Guldur) which may or may not pay off as the story unfolds.  Jackson has also falls victim to the prequel curse by putting too much foreshadowing into the story.  There’s no room to wonder, for fans to debate, etc.

Some of my favorite scenes in the Hobbit story occur in this film (the spiders, the barrels, Bilbo and Smaug, etc.) so I’m really jazzed, but I hope Jackson’s additions don’t dilute or slow down the film the same way all the merry songs at Bag End did in the first film.
